Repair of hardened shaft and pins of Italian Polishing Machine

The case:
The customer brought a damaged shaft from a polishing machine for repair. The two pins holding the polishing wheel were broken. The machine is used in the process of chrome plating different parts. The challenge in this particular job was that the shaft and pins were hardened. To restore the thread we used diamond inserts.

Our process:

We removed the broken pins, restored the metric thread, and made custom new pins to fit.

Counterbored deeper to sink the pins in the shaft so they can be better able to hold the pressure of the working polishing wheel.

Also restored the damaged metric thread on one side of the shaft. Cool fact:One of the applications of this machine is chrome plating parts of Harley Davidson motorcycles.

The repair of hardened machine parts usually involves several processes to restore the component to its original function or to enhance its performance. Hardened materials can be challenging to repair due to their wear resistance and strength. It is essential to assess the compatibility of the repair method with the material, as well as the functional requirements of the part.

Common techniques include welding, thermal spraying, and applying surface treatments. Welding must be approached with caution to prevent cracking or distortion. Preheating, using compatible filler materials, and post-weld heat treatment are crucial steps in the welding repair of hardened parts.

Thermal spraying is another method to deposit wear-resistant coatings onto the damaged area, providing renewed surface properties without significantly affecting the base material.

Additionally, surface treatments such as hardfacing, nitriding, or carburizing can be applied to increase hardness and wear resistance. However, these methods require careful control of process parameters to avoid damage to the parts.

Laser cladding and cold spraying are advanced techniques used for the repair of high-value parts, offering precision and minimal heat input to the substrate.

It is important to consider the compatibility of the repair technique with the material and the operational requirements of the part. Consulting with a materials engineer or a professional experienced in repairing hardened components is advisable before attempting any repair.
